Sadder than the original Newsweek article (which I read and disagreed with), are the comments at the bottom of this article. Too bad so many people can't divorce the actor from his/her performance.
I mean, sure I dislike Repubs in general, but that doesn't stop me from watching and drooling over Adam Baldwin. Jerry Doyle who plays Garibaldi in B5 is even running for office as a Repugnican but I don't let that interfere with my pleasure in re-watching B5. NPH is gay, but hell, adorable...I'd tap that in a heartbeat. Oh, don't even get me started on a list of the hot guys who may or may not be gay but still get my juices flowing. I even daydream about doing actors who are happily married for gawd's sake. It's not a factor in my fantasies nor is a person's sexual orientation a factor in judging an actor's performance.
For an example of playing against type, I suggest people watch the 1997 musical version of Cinderella starring Brandy. The ethnic types were all over the board and yet, it was easy to buy each of them in their part because they were good performers.
Sean Hayes is an awesome actor and deserves some respect for his ability. I don't care who he beds.
Cue the meteor. We still deserve it.
