Read this. Seriously. We have published stuff on the shelves at work that isn't any where near as good as this is.

All her stuff is good so when you're done with it and want more, her other stuff is as good or even better.

I took this new book from the library to read while out of town and enjoyed it: http://www.amazon.com/Forest-Hands-Teeth-Carrie-Ryan/dp/0385736827/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1267128262&sr=1-2
YA novel about after the zombie disease takes over the world. The sequel is due to be released next week. It's a little darker than my usual read, but it was pretty well written and kept my interest.

Dragon lovers, this one is a must try: http://www.amazon.com/His-Majestys-Dragon-Temeraire-Book/dp/1596061464/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1267128469&sr=1-1
Big series, 7 so far I believe. I've read the first two and really liked them. The boss thanked me for pointing them out to her and is buying the newly released first 3 volumes in one book even tho we have the first in paperback. Seems the second was released in paperback too, but is impossible to find/buy. Good sign.

I'm reading Tanya Huff's latest now.

My Book List

I'm pretty pleased with the number of books I managed to read this year in spite of the fact I wasn't able to read one a week as I hoped. I didn't read any during NaNo as I find reading distracts me when I'm doing serious writing. Something about input vs. output I guess. Anyway, behind the cut you will find the title, author and a brief review of each book. No real spoilers as far as I can see. Mostly I just say what the book is basically about and if I liked it. About half of these were rec'ed to me by friends near and far and seeing what they liked that I did or didn't has been an interesting part of the journey.

I didn't list all the picture-type books I brought home to look/drool over like cookbooks and decorating or crafting books. I generally don't read every word of those so I didn't think they really counted. Of the books I read, I think the YAs impressed me the most and there are a couple of those I would rec as entertaining for just about everyone here on my flist.

And finally, I am going to rec one book as my Book of the Year and I hope you'll all go find this one and look it over. I will be severely disappointed in you if you don't. :o)

A book rec

I've been meaning to post this for a while now and Minxy posting twice today has inspired me to rec a wonderful YA book that just happens to be written by a POC. 'Lucy the Giant' is by Sherri L. Smith and it takes place in Alaska. Even tho, in my brief net-researching, I have no idea if Sherri has actually visited Alaska, she gets it right from my limited experience. Lucy is a very tall teen, part native and all courage when push comes to shove. Fed up by having to deal with her drunken father, she runs away from home in Sitka to work on a fishing boat out of Kodiak. She is mistaken for an adult by her size and certainly by her level of maturity. It's got a good plot, is a very realistic portrait of a troubled teen and is mightily entertaining. I found some of her actions frustrating, and I wish they'd been better explained, but it still all rang true. I liked the story so well, I recced it to my co-workers and the Children's Librarian is going to add it to her list for her teen book club.

Go. Find. Read. Enjoy.

(I need to get my boss to buy her book 'Flygirl.' Looks like a good one too.)
