Sadder than the original Newsweek article (which I read and disagreed with), are the comments at the bottom of this article. Too bad so many people can't divorce the actor from his/her performance.

I mean, sure I dislike Repubs in general, but that doesn't stop me from watching and drooling over Adam Baldwin. Jerry Doyle who plays Garibaldi in B5 is even running for office as a Repugnican but I don't let that interfere with my pleasure in re-watching B5. NPH is gay, but hell, adorable...I'd tap that in a heartbeat. Oh, don't even get me started on a list of the hot guys who may or may not be gay but still get my juices flowing. I even daydream about doing actors who are happily married for gawd's sake. It's not a factor in my fantasies nor is a person's sexual orientation a factor in judging an actor's performance.

For an example of playing against type, I suggest people watch the 1997 musical version of Cinderella starring Brandy. The ethnic types were all over the board and yet, it was easy to buy each of them in their part because they were good performers.

Sean Hayes is an awesome actor and deserves some respect for his ability. I don't care who he beds.

Cue the meteor. We still deserve it.

I didn't read the whole article (I'm at work) but the gist I got is that someone wrote that gays shouldn't play straights? Umm, exsqueeze me - that's called 'acting'. If actors only played who and what they are, we'd have movies and shows about nothing but actors and their screwed-up lives. That'd be fun.

As long as an actor can portray the role as written, let 'em do it!

I think I remember that movie. Wasn't there an oriental prince with a white king and a black queen, or something? It played fine to me because I saw the character not the actor. I knew someone years ago that complained because they went to see a play and the father and children were of different races and they didn't think that was right. *eyeroll*

The author of the Newsweek piece is a gay man, but he was complaining that Sean is too gay to play straight. Total wtf.

Yes, Brandy's Cinderella had a cast that was all mixed. They did a great job. You really did just see the character, not the race.

Doesn't matter how talented a person is we can't have "those" types of people influencing our defenseless youths. Oh the humanity of it!!!

Don't forget all them secret gays who are corrupting us too. We better just get rid of the entertainment biz altogether!

Someone needs to remind people that theater has always been full of people playing roles that are dissimilar to the actor themselves. I mean, at one point in time all characters were played by men, regardless of the gender of the character.
