A while back there was a challenge on the Browncoats forum to invent a spin off of Firefly and I came up with this idea.
You need to have seen the episode 'Heart of Gold' in order to be familiar with some of the characters. I'm mainly posting this here for my sister since I promised her I would share my Firefly stuff with her. Maybe she'll be so impressed with LiveJournal she'll get an account. Anyone else who already read this, feel free to ignore.

Time: 16 years after the 'Firefly' television series ends
Place: an un-named moon, at the Heart of Gold whorehouse
Hero: Jonah, 16-year-old son of the late Rance Burgess and Petaline, Madam of the house.
Heroine: Georgie Jayne, 15-year-old daughter of working girl Helen and an unknown father who might have been a visiting mercenary.
This is a story about a quest for lost family and about finding one's place in the universe. Jonah and Georgie have been raised at the whorehouse by a loving extended family of working girls. Their mothers have seen to it that their children are educated in hopes of bettering themselves. Jonah has inherited his mother's kind soul and his father's head for business, but with the sense of justice instilled by his mother, he hopes to become a sheriff. While Georgie doesn't have a great deal of potential in academics, she is loving, sweet and wants to be a nurse or teach small children.
Soon after the story opens, The Alliance swoops into the yard of the whorehouse and takes all inside into custody for working outside the companion guild. The moon is becoming more civilized and some of the local governing body no longer want a whorehouse in business on their moon. The adults are sent off to a prison camp and the kids sent to a kind of detention school for orphans.
Although raised together almost as brother and sister, Jonah and Georgie have been developing feelings for one another. Jonah feels a strong sense of responsibility for Georgie and vows not allow them to be split up. At the school, they find that some of the children, particularly the smarter ones who have potential, are usually taken away to a fearsome academy for unknown purposes. Jonah and Georgie make friends and find allies in their plan for escape. When Jonah discovers he will be shipped out, he conceives a plot to steal the small ship that comes for them with the help of several other talented children who are also afraid they will be taken away.
Successful in their plan, Jonah finds himself captaining a stolen ship with a crew of a dozen children of various ages, fleeing the Alliance forces and searching for a refuge. Taking the position of ships mechanics are a set of gifted 12-year-old twins, Esther and Esau. The pilot and navigator positions are shared by 14-year-old Ivan and his cousin, Sage, who is 13. They have also brought along another cousin, the toddler, Crystal. 16-year-old Vega helps to care for Crystal and another baby, Dev, along with Georgie. She and Georgie both have medical interests and are constantly studying to learn more. Dev's older brother, Mica is 16 and very big for his age. He has a strong back and a quick draw, but it's his ability to pass as an adult that comes in most handily.
They decide to help Georgie find her supposed father, a mercenary who was rumored to have settled down somewhere on a cattle ranch with his fellow mercenaries. Other than the stories told by Helen about the mercenaries who helped them so long ago (which may or may not be true), the only clue they have is the name of the ranch…Serenity. Episode after episode, they search for information, scrounging needed supplies, avoiding the law and bonding into a small family. Will they ever find the hero of Canton? And if they do, will he prove to be Georgie's father? What kind of reception can they expect? Will they accept the other children? And will this man help free Georgie's mother, Helen…if it's not too late?

Date: 2005-09-10 05:56 pm (UTC)But it's ruttin' brilliant Delph. If I **BEG**, would you write the actual first chapter or episode? I'll be honest--I have ulterior motives: this spoke to me. It COULD turn into a community like SG-15, if you chose to do so. One I would definitely contribute to.
Glad you posted it, and I think IF YOU WANTED to let it be an AU that other fic-writers could participate in, then you should post it to the Firefly Fics community. (I could put the link there to this post for you, if you are still figuring out the cross/community posting.)
Also, I signed up for the Stargate AU Ficathon...will you please be my BETA again?
