Survived a 2 hour float trip on the Kenai River in drizzly, sporadic rain. It was quite lovely and very peaceful in many places.

Behind the cut for spoilers. Seriously. Don't look if you didn't see it.

R U kidding? )

Well, that was quick. Silver turned down "Passage." She said she couldn't connect to the story or characters. Huh. Well, on to the next I guess.

It's been really quiet here and I'm wondering if it's due to the DoS attacks or am I just boring?

I have my kid's cold. Or maybe it was someone elses'. Not that it matters. I'm just miserable.

Weather is still chilly but sunny and most of yesterday's snowfall has melted off since yesterday morning. The DH has my car and is going to take the studded tires off so it better not snow again!

As promised, pix of our first snowfall of the season.

Marshmallow World! )
We've had more snow since, so I'll try to get some shots when the sun is up today before it all melts away as it's gotten warmer today.

It's Here!

Even tho we've had a few light dustings or flakes that hit the ground and melted, I got up to a marshmallow world this morning! 2 - 3 inches out there and it's still coming down. I'd take a pic for you, but it's still dark out and I have to get ready for work. Maybe later.

Nano Word count as of last night: 9024, so I've only got about a thou to catch up today.

RIP Uncle Ted

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010 08:07 am
delphia2ohohoh: (Aurora byAmnellWyvern)
I feel obligated to note the passing of Senator Ted. He was, after all, good for our state and good to my family. My late brother-in-law was his campaign photographer and traveled the state with Ted. My brother Tom was working at the Anchorage airport at the time of Ted's first plane crash and was first on the scene. Ted took the time to come to my nephew's Eagle Scout ceremony because JP's dad had passed on by that time and brought him a flag that had been flown over the Capitol to honor my nephew's achievement. He was always warm and gracious to me.

Do I think he was any worse than any other politician? No. I believe the term 'honest politician' is an oxymoron. They are, after all, mostly trained as lawyers in the first place and I don't think any of them are sterling human beings. They are also, for the most part, wealthy to start with and don't understand real people. However, if they can do some good while they are lining their own pockets, then at least that's something. There is no arguing that Ted did well for the state.

Many people complain about how much Federal aid he brought to Alaska. Well, wasn't that his job? Would you be pissed if your senator was that powerful and brought money, jobs and aid to your state? Nobody ever mentions that as a territory, Alaska paid into the Feds for 40 years without receiving any benefits. Even Hawaii as a territory still got Fed money for roads and Puerto Rico continues to take more than they pay in. I don't see too many complaints about them.

It's interesting to note that so many people from the lower 48 have never spoken to their representatives in DC, much less even their own local state government reps. I've talked with most of mine and am working with Ted's replacement, Mark Begich to help get my DH his Medicare benefits. Hell, I feel free to speak my mind to Mark and his counterpart, Lisa in emails frequently on issues that concern me.

Uncle Ted did his job. He died doing what he loved doing, in the state he loved. That's a pretty good death. My condolences to his family and to the families of the others who died in the crash.

We have snow in the forecast tonight. It is flipping cold out there too. I need to start looking for a new winter coat.

My day off

I was mostly AWOL on Sunday altho I did peek in and read a bit here. I was feeling crappy and had a sore back/shoulder which left me unable to raise my left arm to shoulder height even, so I skipped out on everything, even Mass. I sat around and watched the telly and looked at some picture drooly-type books from the library. You know the kind: dream houses, gardens, cookbooks with food you will never cook or probably never eat either. We watched a DVD from the library too. I think it was called When The Rains Came or something like that. About a Brit in India who is doing his servant girl. Ho-hum. Can't rec it. The DH made dinner and did his own laundry while hobbling around on his bad knee. The brace he got doesn't seem to be doing the trick other than keeping him upright when the knee goes out which I think is points in its favor.

Got up this morning with back/shoulder feeling fine. (WTF) It was pea soup fog outside when I staggered to the kitchen for coffee, but glorious sunshine by the time I left for work. It was up in the low 70's today. (Bleah!) I only worked 4 hours but spent most of the time shelving so I'm frazzled.

No work for the next 3 days, so I'm determined to do some writing. And maybe go catch Harry Potter before it leaves town.

There's a pot of homemade chicken soup on the stove just waiting for the old guy to get home. Rumor has it my AWOL child is coming with him. Must need a shower and a change of clothing. :oP

ETA:I'm sure I've recced this before, but page 5, Pierce Brosnen totally slayed me!

Palin to resign as Alaska Governor

Okay, well, I didn't see that coming. Not that I'm sorry. But her Lt. Gov Sean Parnell is pretty much as crack-brained as she is.

Dang. We won't have Sarah to kick around anymore. Altho, since she's probably going to run for President....LOL! Let the games begin!

ETA: There are some really interesting rumors out there, some listed here at The Mudflats Blog which I highly rec for great information about Alaska politics. Apparently some Federal investigating is going on regarding Sarah's house and the Sports Complex she had built when she was Mayor of Wasilla. Interesting indeed!

Sorry I've been AWOL. Had too many busy days in a row. I'm ready to collapse into bed, but finally downloaded these from my camera. I think I took them last Thursday. We don't get sunny, clear days like this too often.

Here's the regular shot from the bluff at the end of the street.

And here's the telephoto shot.

It's building a lava dome and they expect it to blow ash all over again.

Animal planet will be playing a series of shows about Alaskan bear man, Charlie Vandergaw starting April 17. I can say with full knowledge that Charlie is more than just a little eccentric, but he's harmless and a friend of the family. My big sis has taught school with him and been a personal friend of Charlie and his family for many years. Right now he's in litigation with the state of Alaska because he feeds bears on his very remote and isolated property. See, here in Alaska, it's okay to feed the bears...if you intend to kill them. Some of us don't agree with that any more than we agree with shooting wolves from airplanes and gassing their pups in their dens so that our state can be one big moose farm for the hunters. I hope you'll tune in and watch and comment favorably on the website about the show.

I will admit bears scare the bejeezus out of me, but I appreciate their function and don't want to see them hunted into extinction. (I'd just like them to stay out of my yard!)

For those with not-so-pic-friendly-internet-speeds, I have a new gallery in my photo scrapbook here called The Mt. Redoubt Show where I have more pics. It's open to the public. This is how I like my volcanos...far away, picturesque and blowing ash elsewhere!

Mostly for lunie, but you can all look if you'd like. I think clicking on the photo will take you to a larger version in my scrapbook, but if you want to look closer, I can email a bigger pic to anyone who wants to see. Here's a teaser from today. I took this shot around noon just down the road from us. That's a big old drop off right up front. The arrow points to the ash/steam plume.

In the past, I've recommended a political blog called The Mudflats (http://www.themudflats.net/)to anyone who really wanted to know the truth about Sarah Palin and the dirt that mires our Alaskan politics. Today, one of a our state legislators, Mike Doogan a Democrat in the State House, who felt threatened by the truth, outed her by publishing her real name in an email to his constituents. Now as you all know, Our Fair Governator is an incredibly vindictive person and apparently, so are other politicians up here. By publishing this person's name (I choose not to do so), he has put her and her family in harm's way. He's a former journalist who should know the value of anonymous sources, yet he didn't like what she had to say about him, so he took our time (the State Legislator is in session) and tracked her down to out her because he feels he has the right to.

He talks about 'transparency and accountability' as an excuse, and yet this was a blog by a private citizen who has the right to say anything they want to, anonymous or not. Mudflats is a blogger who cheerfully admitted her own bias and had no public power other than the weight of words. Apparently the weight of those words were causing Mr. Doogan some discomfort, so in a petty, mean, small and possibly illegal way, he stuck back. He took a job that is public, to make decisions for the public he represents and indeed, for all Alaskans as he votes on important issues that affect every one of us in this state. He's an author and a former columnist for the Anchorage Daily News. He's chosen to be a public figure and as a politician, he is accountable. Yet he violates ethics for his own petty revenge.

Once again, I'm ashamed of Alaska politics. We make the Taliban look good. At least they think God is directing, not that they ARE God.

I sincerely hope at least an ethics complaint is lodged against him if not a full civil suit against him by Mudflats. Think about it...you are anonymous here. Want your private and personal information made public? Want your employer, your family to read what you post here? Want them to look in your journals and diaries? This is a First Amendment Right and he had no right to do what he did. As someone posted at Mudflats, The Federalist Papers were published anonymously and for damn good reason.

I hope you'll at least continue to watch this story as it develops because it has to do with your privacy too. Me..I think I need to write some emails.

Redoubt has finally erupted, but since it's dark out, no one seems to really know how bad. Didn't feel any quakes here nor was there any noise. We have no ashfall here at almost 1am, so I don't think we'll get any or not much. From what I can find on the net, it seems what little ash there is will be heading north towards the MatSu Valley. I'm going to turn in and I'll update in the morning.
